IAF Birds get Into Action, Rescue 22 From Deluge

CHENNAI: Lending a hand to the flood relief efforts after unprecedented showers that lashed Chennai and its surrounding areas, the Indian Air Force deployed its helicopters to undertake rescue and relief efforts at Kancheepuram on Monday.

As many 22 stranded people were rescued, while food packets contributed by the air force station in Tambaram were air dropped during the operations.

The Chetak helicopters from the air force station were pressed into service following a request by the Kancheepuram district collector, after the waterbodies in Mudichur and Manimangalam breached their banks and floodwaters entered residential areas in the neighborhood.

Due to constant rains, only six sorties could be carried out for reccee, relief and rescue, said a statement from the force.

The rescue operations were hampered by fresh rains, but will resume at first light on Tuesday, added the statement.
