
The Government has entered into an international agreement with Russian Federation for setting up of 2 Light Water Reactors (VVER type) of capacity 1000 MW each, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) Unit-3&4 in Tamil Nadu at the existing site of Kudankulam. The Government has also accorded financial and administrative approval for the project KKNPP-3&4 in March 2013.
The design and development of indigenous 700 MW PHWRs have been successfully completed and implemented. In this regard, 2x700 MW PHWRs at KAPP-3&4 and 2x700 MW PHWRs at RAPP-7&8, are currently under various stages of construction. The materials and equipment for these reactors as well as for the future reactors have also been developed by Indian Industry in this regard. Also, the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu currently under construction by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI) is totally an indigenous project and uses fuel, which is indigenously obtained from reprocessing of spent fuel of first stage Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs).
