The Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad on Sunday detained a former army havildar from Pokhran in Jaisalmer on suspicion of spying for Pakistani intelligence agencies, an official said.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), state intelligence and military officials are questioning the former army man, who is presently working as a patwari (revenue official), said Alok Tripathi, additional director general of police (Anti-Terrorism Squad and Special Operation Group).

Goverdhan Singh, 58, was suspected of being involved in anti-national activities and was under watch for several months, he said.

“Singh might be arrested after interrogation process is over. He is also likely to be questioned by Intelligence Bureau officials.”

Singh is a patwari at Khetolai in Pokhran where nuclear tests are conducted. The area also houses military ranges where annual war exercises take place.

On December 11, an official of the state-run Indian Oil Corporation was arrested in Jaipur for alleged links with the Islamic State and urging youngsters to join the jihadi group.

Mohammed Sirajuddin, a native of Karnataka, was accused of being in touch with people associated with the IS and using social networking platforms to recruit for the terror group.
