India is one of the largest military powers on the planet. India also has access to nuclear weapons. It's expected to become the fourth highest military spender on the planet by 2020.

India has the world’s fourth most powerful military, according to the annual ranking made by Global Firepower, an analytical website exploring the military power of different countries.

The United States heads the list, while Russia & China is ranked second & third, which does not include nuclear weapons, only conventional ones.

Despite sequestration and other spending cuts, the United States spends an astonishing $601 billion on defence than the next nine countries on Credit Suisse's index combined. America's biggest conventional military advantage is its fleet of 10 aircraft carriers. In comparison India, which is constructing its third carrier, has the second-most carriers in the world.

While we are still ages away from becoming as strong as the US or the Russian Army, it’s nonetheless a proud moment for all of us!

Summary

Global Firepower (GFP) continues to provide its unique analytical display of data concerning modern military powers. Over 125 powers are considered in the ranking which allows for a broad spectrum of comparisons to be achieved concerning relative military strengths.

Note that nuclear capability is not taken into account, the GFP ranking is based strictly on each nation's potential conventional war-making capability across land, sea and air. The final ranking incorporates values related to resources, finances and geography. Over 50 different factors make up the final GFP ranking, delivering the "PowerIndex" value by way of an in-house formula, and bonuses and penalties are applied where appropriate. Updates to the list are attempted annually or when new information / corrections warrant them.
