Journalist Barkha Dutt Files Police Complaint About Threat Calls Following JNU Coverage

Journalist Barkha Dutt Tuesday said that she has been receiving death threat calls for her reportage on the ongoing row over the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). She said she had lodged a police complaint on March 4 and recorded her statement before the magistrate under CrPC 164.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Dutt said, “I recorded my statement before the Magistrate. The statement was recorded pertaining to the complaint that I had filed before the police on March 4, where I have submitted that I have been receiving calls from an unknown person, who has been threatening me and has used sexually abused statements.

The court has now taken cognizance of fact that since 4th of March, I have received anonymous abusive death threats for my reportage on JNU.

The police has registered a case under Section 509 of the IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and other relevant sections in connection with the complaint.”
