AHMEDABAD: DG Vanzara, a 1987-batch IPS officer, received a rousing welcome on Friday when he returned to the city nine years after his 2007 arrest in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case. He was subsequently arrested as an accused in Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan fake encounter cases. He spent eight of the nine years in jail - first in Ahmedabad and then in Mumbai.

DG Vanzara returned home to a tumultuous heroes welcome by his supporters

Vanzara was in prison when he retired in 2014.

At 9.15am on Friday, Vanzara flew into Ahmedabad from Mumbai. Hundreds of supporters gave him a hero's welcome amid shouts of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and waved the Tricolour. He was quickly taken to Gandhinagar for a public reception at the Town Hall.

More than 1,500 people participated in the function where Vanzara was felicitated by representatives of Hindu organisations, including RSS and VHP, along with several sects and ashrams.

Vanzara said he was overwhelmed by the love he had received. Without taking names, he criticised politicians for his and his colleagues' incarceration.
